XIII.—The hours of duty are such as the Captain Superintendent of Police may direct. They vary but in the majority of cases they do not exceed 8 hours in the 24 for Water Police, and 6 hours in the 24 for Land Police.

XIV.—An officer is required to attend school for one hour on four days in each week until he obtains a certificate of competency, without which he cannot obtain promotion in the Force.

XV. An officer is required to attend drill for half an hour on three or four days in each week until he is passed as efficient.

XVI.-Officers in charge of stations in certain rural districts are required to perform, in addition to their police duties, duties for the Sanitary Department, Harbour Department, and Land Office without extra remuneration.

XVII.-Officers are provided with free quarters, fuel, and light.

XVIII. The following are provided free

Beds and bedding, summer and winter clothing, helmets, great coats, and boots, or money

in lieu of boots.

XIX.-An officer on joining is provided with table linen, cutlery, glass, orookery ware, and cooking utensils for the sum of $5.

XX. An officer is provided with free medical attendance. If absent from duty in hospital through sickness from olimatic or ordinary causes the following stoppages are made—

The following particulars of rates of salary and allowances at present obtaining but liable to revision from time to time are appended for information:—

(1) The European Force is composed of 2 Chief Inspectors, at £300, rising by biennial incrementa of £30 to £390 a year, 7 Inspectors, 1st Class, at £240, rising by biennial increments of £10 to £260 a year, 8 Inspectors, 2nd Class, at £200, rising by biennial increments of £10 to £220. 28 Sergeants at £155, rising by biennial increments of £10 to £175 a year, 27 Lance-Sergeanta at £130 rising by annual increments of £5 to £145 a year, 96 Constables at £100, rising by triennial increments of £10 to £120 a year; of the above 2 Sergeants, 3 Lance-Sergeants and 13 Constables are employed in the Water Police, and do duty in Steam Launches and boats in the Harbour and outside it.

(2) Besides this, 33 Sergeants and Constables of the Foree are members of the Fire Brigade, for which they receive extra pay as follows :—

Three Foremen at $25 a month; 4 Assistant Foremen at $20 a month, 4 Engine Drivers at $25 a month; 3 Assistant Engine Drivers at $20 a month, 22 Firemen at $15 a month.

Five Sergeants and 3 Lance-Sergeants draw allowances of $25 and $20 a month respectively for detective duty.

Two Inspectors, 11 Sergeants and 9 Constables, draw from $4 to $6 a month for Telephone Services.

(3) Allowances for knowledge of languages are granted as follows:-

If, however, his sickness is certified to be the result of his own indiscretion half-pay only will be allowed during the whole time of his absence from duty.

(4) Medals are occasionally granted for special services or for long and faithful service and carry with them the following allowances —

4th class Medal, $2.50 a month,

QUALIFICATIONS.

Age-to be not less than 18 and not more than 25 years of age.

Minimum height 5 feet 8 inches, chest measurement 33 inches for 5 feet 8 inches (increasing

proportionately).
